Cells and their environments can differ a lot from lab to lab, from project to project, and so can your counting needs. You may have individual samples, or a lot of them. Or even true high throughput assay campaigns looking at cell counts of certain qualities, the most simple discrimination being live/dead in a viability test. And your cells may be of simple morphology and relatively clean in a culture medium, or primary cells with a lot of debris around, maybe even in whole blood. Or you want to follow dynamic cell counts over time in a real time live proliferation or migration assay, with or without the need to label them. And subtle differences between e.g. necrosis and apoptosis matter for your counting.
